Grommets
These familiar metal rings are available in a surprising variety of shapes, sizes and strengths. They are useful in any application requiring a reinforced hole in fabric. Most grommets are fastened to a pre-punched hole. Washers serve as the "second half" of grommets, the reinforcement and support for the grommet setting. Grommets usually are available in round and oblong shapes. Sizes commonly range from 3/16 inch to more than one inch in diameter. They are inserted into fabric with a setting-die specific to the grommet type.
Eyelet: Eyelets appear similar to grommets but are generally smaller and lighter-duty, for small holes where high strength is not required. This hardware often is used with decorative lacing.
Rolled-rim grommet with spur washer: This combination provides the most strength and resistance to pull out. The grommet features a thicker, rounded rim and the washer flashes double rows of teeth.
Self-piercing grommet: This type of grommet doesn't require a pre-punched hole, as it can pierce most fabrics, as it is set along with the washer.
Sewable grommet: A toughened-nylon grommet with a tab that can be sewn or bonded to fabric or webbing, eliminating the need for holes in the fabric.
Tooth washer: A plain washer with a row of teeth, this item is used with common sheet-metal grommets to provide a tighter grasp, particularly when using woven materials.
